It was such a treat to emcee and moderate the 2019 Prince Claus Fund Awards Ceremony at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. I had the honor of sharing the stage with this year’s inspiring Laureates — all women! From Sudan, to Thailand, Congo-Brazzaville, Brazil, Niger, Ecuador and Mexico, they push the boundaries of cultural expression in countries where culture is under attack, through visual arts, film, architecture and literature. The Principal Laureate, Kamala Ibrahim Ishag, is a powerful 80-year-old Sudanese artist who told me that she still paints every day and that for her, ‘art comes from the soul.’
